Nominations for the 2022 Music City Films Critics’ Association’s Film Awards

I said it once and I’ll say it again, 2021 has been a great year for cinema. We saw plenty of directorial debuts, a decent amount of originality, sequels that surpassed their predecessors, and plenty of Benedict Cumberbatch and JK Simmons. Last month I brought you the nominations for the now postponed Critics Choice Awards, as I am a member of the Critics Choice Association. Well, I’m also a member of the Music City Films Critics’ Association, as is my GVN brother, Dillon Gonzales, and our votes have been tallied and the nominations are hot and ready. Here’s what we had to say:

The power of the dog is leading the way with 10 nominations for the Music City Film Critics’ Association’s 2022 Film Awards. Jane Campion’s Western earns the most nominations for a film in MCFCA history.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – January 11, 2022 – The Music City Film Critics‘ Association is proud to announce its nominations for the MCFCA 2022 Film Awards. The association is made up of more than 30 professional film critics working in or near Nashville, Tennessee.

The winners will be announced on January 25, 2022.

The power of the dog leads the way with 10 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director – Jane Campion, Best Actor – Benedict Cumberbatch, Best Supporting Actress – Kirsten Dunst, Best Supporting Actor – Kodi Smit-McPhee, Best Screenplay, Best Score, Best Sound, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing.

Belfast, Dunes, and Licorice Pizza follow close behind with eight nominations each. West Side Story completes the top five with six nominations.

A Quiet Place Part II, CODA, Don’t look up, Mass, and Macbeth’s Tragedy each scored four nominations.

“As the film industry continues to recover during an ongoing pandemic, the 2021 calendar has been filled with a number of exceptional films from January through December,” said Sean Atkins, President of MCFCA. “From blockbusters, independents and streamers, I couldn’t be happier with our wide variety of nominees up and down the ballot. All of this wouldn’t be possible without our members, the filmmakers, the studios behind these nominees, and the healthcare workers who have done everything to fight COVID-19 and help us feel safe and comfortable to return. more often in the cinema. .”

MCFCA Vice President Michael Compton added:

“Once again, the nominations encompass a wide variety of films, from blockbusters to streaming options. These nominations reflect an exceptional year in cinema in terms of quantity and quality. »
